Thank’s to a rapidly growing Indian fashion industry as well as highly stylised Bollywood films, Indian men’s fashion is now a major industry.

We tend to concentrate mostly on the upper body part of the garment, whether it’s a kurta, sherwani, achkan, bandh-gala or Nehru jacket long or short.

But what about the bottoms? There’s also great variety on offer for the bottom part of the garment. Here’ we’ll give you some insight on the styles and looks you can go for, and who knows you may discover a new look that you’d like to try!

The Dhoti

GNot just limited to being a garment mostly worn by Hindu priests, or perhaps traditional Brahmins in India, the dhoti is here to stay and is not just a fashion trend.

Gracing many a fashion ramp, most Indian fashion designers have offered their take on the dhoti and the results have been wonderful. Traditionally the dhoti is a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth, usually around 4.5 metres long, and is wrapped around the waist and legs, and knotted at the waist.

They come pre-stitched now

Today however, for the men who don’t know how to tie a dhoti or have limited time, many of these dhoti kurta, dhoti sherwani combinations come with pre-stitched dhotis – so you’re all sorted!

Jodhpurs – When India gave fashion to the west

You may have seen them on the Polo field a lot since they come from royalty. Now they a mainstay in western fashion for both men and women, the Jodhpurs get their name from the capital city of the former princely state of Marwar (now the second largest metropolis in Rajasthan).

It was Maharaja Pratap Singh of Idar and the Regent of Jodhpur who was an avid Polo player who embarked on a quest to find a suitable garment more suited to his needs of the game. Basing his original ‘prototype’ on the classic ‘churidar’ pant, he increased the baggy aspect by flaring the garment along the thighs and hips, while retaining the fitted aspect along the calf, giving us the now revered and rather stylish Jodhpurs worn by both men and women across the sub-continent as well as the world over. Coco Chanel was said to be the first high-profile woman seen in Jodhpurs!

The long and pant of it!
A straight slim-fit tailored pant is oh so stylish with many looks, whether it’s the dashing Nehru-Jacket (The Indian Man’s Suit) or even a Kurta the straight pant is as versatile as it is simple.

It simply goes with everything!

Siddharth Malhotra looking handsome in a straight pant and Nehru Jacket

Funny man Ranveer Singh being himself while looking very regal and dashing in his bandh-gala and straight suit-pant

Fawad Khan sporting the straight pant with his Nehru Jacket and Kurta for movie Khoobsurat looking very suave.

The Pathani Salwar

Originating from what is now Afghanistan and North-west Pakistan the pathani salwar is commonly worn by men of those regions as well as parts of North India.

The Pathani salwar is a very loose-fitting pant which typically cuffs at the ankle and is normally worn with a kurta. Pathani salwars are worn by both men and women as well.

Shahrukh Khan a ‘Pathan’ himself, is often seen sporting the Pathani salwar at formal events, and is even dressed up in the look for the runway especially by friend and leading Indian designer Manish Malhotra.

New-age Indian men’s fashion: Taking inspiration from the Pathani Salwar and Dhoti then you get the above!

The classic churidar

We all know about the churidar, and if you’ve worn an Indian men’s garment before, it’s highly likely you wore the Churidar.

This stylish garment is considered a traditional long pant which typically extends from the waist, it’s usually tied with a draw-string at the waist (now elastic is also very common) and goes down to the ankle and is, slightly baggy at the hips. It comes with extra fabric at the bottom of the pant which then wrinkle up giving you the Churis (bangle-like rings) – another garment worn by both men and women in the sub-continent.
