The evergreen saree has a special place in the world of Indian Fashion. It’s not only popular with the older generation but also quite trendy amongst contemporary young women. In fact, it has marked its presence from Filmfare to Cannes and Oscars. Indian famous celebrities to the likes of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have represented India on international platforms wearing saree.

No matter what the occasion is, no matter what the scale of function is, Sarees always do justice to the occasion and to the woman who drapes and dons it. Sarees have evolved over the years and it’s good to see the blend of regional styles and contemporary vibe in the sarees these days. We’re categorizing sarees in two – Traditional and Contemporary.

Traditional Sarees

The traditional embroidery and patterns that are evergreen come under traditional sarees. The Banarasi Silk sarees, Kanjivaram Silk sarees, Cotton saree, Traditional tread embroidery, Zari, etc. have been there from ages and they are not going anywhere. They are always in demand not only in India but abroad too. In fact, in Australia too there’s good demand for traditional Indian sarees.

The Indian sarees have a traditional draping style too. There’s Gujarati style, Maharashtrian style, the original style and many others. They are designed keeping in mind their draping style also – how will the pleats fold, how the draping will be done and how will the end fall.

Yesteryear’s renowned actress, Rekha has brought Kanjeevaram to the forefront, Designer’s like Sabyasachi, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla do not complete any of their collections without including Sarees in them and a majority of them are designed keeping in mind the traditional draping style.

Contemporary Sarees

They are nothing but the designer sarees that are in tune with modern women. They are designed, coloured and packaged to target the modern women only- Saris that have a scope of experiment, saris that compliment modern styles of blouses. The cotton sarees have made their niche market among young women.

From dhoti style draping to half wrap-around to traditional draping contemporary saree style is all about flexibility and practicality. Sonam Kapoor’s designer saree at Cannes film festival a couple of years back was one statement piece. Deepika Padukone’s innumerable saree appearances have made have added that sassy element to this style of fashion.

After the Bollywood song ‘Desi Girl’ became a huge hit, this six-yard piece of clothing became the first choice of every Indian woman to sport at a public gathering and to do that signature Step of the song. Then came ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ and that Royal blue Saree of Deepika in the song ‘Battameez Dil’ was what every girl asking for.
